A book for marketers... (ANOM#68)

Book + Writing + Heaven & Hell

Time to read: 2:31 minutes

Patience is the most important ingredient.

Without it, we find ourselves in regret and regression.

And it's enemy? Pride. I know about that...

You are presuming control when you make a rash decision or don't wait.

You are deciding the outcome, which is good behavior. Take charge!

But not at the cost of limiting your options. Optionality is key.

And what keeps your options open? Patience.

I'm experiencing this in my job search. Where does it apply in your life?

Enjoy this week's letter:

1. One (marketing) Idea

I'm writing a book (that will be open source - more on that at the end)

That felt good to write and put on (digital) paper.

It's for early-stage marketers to better grasp "modern" marketing.

There's so much to learn to be effective. I want to gather and deliver the most helpful information.

The stuff I wish I learned when I started seven years ago.

Instead, I had to unlearn a ton of stuff.

And I'll forever do that. That's a good strategy. But I wish I had a book with many voices sharing guidance grounded in first principles.

That's what I'm creating by April of 2025.

It will also be a podcast season, with commentary over those "voices."

It will be people I read when I first started, like Gary Vaynerchuk, Seth Godin, and Marcus Sheridan (hopefully!).

Others will be people I just met on LinkedIn who get marketing.

The best part: I need your help to build this.

I mentioned it's open source. Meaning I want and need your input.

Whether to share your thoughts, provide feedback, or cheer me on ☺️

Will you help? Or do you know someone who fits an early-stage marketer who could use this?

That will assist in making this more helpful.

Thank you for the support (I'll need more!) ❣️

2. One Quote

Marketing is writing.

I said that in Episode 12 of Season 3 (https://podcastonmarketing.transistor.fm/53).

Kyle Lacy, Season 1 guest, confirms my hypothesis:

"Over the years, I've learned that writing is the only way I can truly evolve as a marketer, father, and human." Kyle Lacy (CMO @ Jellyfish).

In the episode, I argue to improve our marketing ability, we must write.

Through writing, we think. And what is marketing? Thinking.

I cannot "unsee" how intertwined writing and marketing are.

Name something in marketing that writing doesn't touch.

Podcast/Video Scripts
Marketing Strategies
Paid/Google Ads
Social media
Websites

To do better marketing, write more.

3. One Episode

Morgan Housel is one of the better writers I follow (thanks, Steven L. for putting me onto him)

It’s a chill conversation on how to improve your ability to write.

And as I've said, marketing IS writing.

4. One (life) Idea

Heaven or hell.

We choose one every day (and minute).

For ourselves
Family/Friends
Professional peers
And random strangers

How we act and what we do can bring heaven or hell to those around us.

Consciously and subconsciously.

We may choose to get upset and take our anger out on someone.

Or we could deliberately not help someone to "get back."

We also buy cheap coffee and "participate in a trail of child labor.
Or be unknowingly befriending an evil person, causing hell to many.

We must look critically at our lives and see where we bring both.

I regularly talk negatively to myself. And that has caused hell for myself and others when I'm not in a good state.

So I've tried to correct that.

I now buy organic and fair trade coffee, but I used to not care. Until I became aware I was "participating" in bringing hell to others.

I believe a goal of life is to bring more heaven than hell to others (and yourself).

(At least, that's my daily goal)

5. One Photo

Smile more.
