A Newsletter on Marketing (and Life) #060
Some big news...
Time to read: 2:07 minutes

1. One (marketing) Idea
Social can be helpful (for brands).
And it can be hurtful.
Hurtful in that it's a distraction from higher ROI activities.
The truth is: Social is not right for every company.
Cold email could be a better use of your limited budget or resources.
Or conferences and other in-person events.
The list of options is endless. Marketing is vast.
And it all comes down to one thing:
Does it ladder up (to your marketing strategy)?
If social media marketing helps you achieve your objectives, do it.
If not, find better avenues.
Social isn't the savior for your business.
(Yet for some, it is)
2. One Quote
"We've never done podcasts."
"What would it take?"
"I call this the Magic Question, and it's my favorite influence strategy." – Zoe Chance (Influence is Your Superpower)
Not only does it help with influence, but it also keeps you open to all opportunities. By asking, "How can we make it happen?" you improve your influence and embrace innovation.
Too many people say, "We want to push the limits!" in boardrooms, yet fail to follow through.
You eventually find a way to actualize when you stay open to possibility.
It won't look how you wish. But it will happen.
(That's what truly matters)
3. Episode on Marketing's fundamentals with Mitch
Many marketers focus on the lower aims.
Traffic. Likes. Followers.
Yet fail to grasp the higher aims.
Mitch Schoenman, today's guest, helps illuminate how to think about the higher aims of marketing.
And how to build a holistic marketing strategy.
What else does he touch on?
How marketing's job is to drive revenue
How the customer journey isn't linear but still is helpful
Why hacks don't work and why you should focus on sustainable revenue generation
And finally, to think from the perspective of others and to take care of yourself to take care of others

4. One (life) Idea
You might have noticed this newsletter slimming over the past months.
Your eyes aren't fooling you. I put it on a vegan diet.
Just kidding...The truth is a bit bigger:
I'm pregnant. I mean...my wife is pregnant.
Okay...we're pregnant!
And I’ve been preparing for Baby O, arriving at the end of November.
I'm eager, terrified, and joyful. All at the same damn time.
One of those areas is writing this letter. I need to cut my time down to one evening instead of multiple days of 30-plus-minute writing sessions.
I hope to get back there.
It kills me not to write as much.
But life comes first.
And if you know me, you know my dream job is getting paid to write, speak, and read. So I'll be back.
Thanks for being here, and I can't wait for you to "meet" Baby O ❣️
---
One thing I can promise is that this will never "end."
I plan to continue sharing small bits with you. And I hope you stay and allow me to get to know you.
If you have any parenting advice, I'm ALL EARS.
Thank you for being here on this journey with me. It means a lot ❣️
– JO (every second counts)
P.S. Expect future emails to land in your inbox early Sunday morning. It’s another adjustment for the future 👶
